SWFL homeowners encouraged to prep insurance for hurricane season

The destructive force of a hurricane should never be taken lightly. The Sullivan State Farm Agencies are taking the necessary steps to help Southwest Floridians take precautions to prepare families and property ahead of hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

These powerful storms can unleash devastating winds, torrential rains, storm surges and tornadoes, causing extensive damage. Cape Coral State Farm agents Mike and Dawn Sullivan encourage homeowners to review and understand their home and auto policy coverage, deductibles, and exclusions their policies may have. The right amount of coverage can make all the difference when trying to recover and rebuild following a storm.

Nearly all flood insurance is written through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). A flood insurance policy normally takes 30 days from the date of purchase to go into effect. So, it’s important to purchase the policy well in advance of hurricane season.

It’s often challenging for homeowners to voluntarily leave their oasis behind when a storm is on the way. Those who decide to stay home may be putting their personal safety at risk. Enrolling in a short-term disability plan ahead of a dangerous situation can help a person who is later unable to perform the essential functions of their job due to an injury.

When leaving your home, be sure to have an evacuation plan in place for all family members and furry friends. Hurricane evacuation kits should be updated with fresh supplies each season.

Preparing your home and possessions with insurance coverage is the right first step, but you’ll also want to prepare your home to withstand the storm. Keep this list in mind when you’re preparing for an incoming hurricane:

· Stock plywood and materials for boarding up windows

· Secure your garage door

· Designate a space to store garbage cans and outdoor furniture

· Secure boats and cars

· Create a home inventory with photos and videos of possessions
