Qnamic AG: Swiss are world market leaders in software for railway logistics
Only three years after being founded, the Swiss software company Qnamic has reached the profit zone and is now the world market leader in «Intelligent Resource Management» for the railway industry. A market of 1 bn CHF is within reach.(rfi) «We are now world market leaders in software for railway logistics», says Qnamic CEO Dirk Pfeiffer. Within a remarkably short time, the start-up from Switzerland has succeeded in reaching the top league of the sector. Doubling their business volume to 4.4 m CHF, the young company has closed the business year 2006 with great success. Compared to the previous year, the annual profit has tripled.
Two European railway companies were acquired as new international clients last year. They open the road to the lucrative international railway market, which Qnamic CEO Pfeiffer estimates as being approximately 1 bn CHF.
In order to cope with the rapid growth, Qnamic has nearly doubled the number of its employees.
There is no way past Qnamic
Within only three years after being founded, Qnamic has become the leading provider of «Intelligent Resource Management» for the railway industry. A consulting company’s industry study concludes that Qnamic’s are the only solutions on the world market which meet the logistic challenges of today’s railway industry. Qnamic’s approach is unique and, at the same time, trendsetting. The software permits the simultaneous planning of all the critical business processes of a railway company as well as all the necessary resources, from rolling stock to personnel, throughout the value chain. At the same time, all the operational rules, e.g. work-time rules are taken into consideration.
Today, not only BLS and Southeast Railway Switzerland (SOB) in Switzerland but also the railways of Sweden and Luxembourg use Qnamic solutions to plan the use of their resources more efficiently and reliably. «We are currently in negotiation with further European railways», says Pfeiffer. In times of liberalization, which demand higher efficiency from companies, intelligent software solutions to optimize railway operations play an increasingly large part. They allow railway companies to reduce costs in order to remain competitive but also, of course, to relieve the taxpayer.
A large market is developing
Especially thinking in processes, which is currently being introduced to the railway industry, is advantageous to Qnamic as it results in increased demand for process-oriented applications. In the past, many railway companies worked with solutions that concentrated on one problem at the time. However, they no longer suffice to control complex systems like today’s railway operations in line with the market. Pfeiffer assumes that the market volume for software in the «Intelligent Resource Management» sector will grow rapidly in the next few years.
New Product Brings New Drive
Last summer, a new product generation brought a technological breakthrough that will ensure an edge over the competition for the Swiss company for a number of years. The Qnamic product RailOpt2, which was completed in August 2006, has already become the company’s most promising business volume driver. It permits railway companies to plan train operations even better. RailOpt2 covers all the planning stages and the operations management as well as taking all the company- internal rules, including legal industrial safety regulations, into account.
Thanks to the Qnamic solution, planning is largely automatic and thus saves time and is less accident sensitive. It is therefore a solid basis for management decisions. «We help the railway companies to use the necessary resources more efficiently», says Pfeiffer. Qnamic’s clients have all replaced the previous model with RailOpt2, which is easier for Qnamic to maintain. It also corresponds to the most modern technological standards and provides more options to adapt the system to the specific requirements of the client.
