Award-winning author warns of economic, privacy risks for artificial intelligence and machine learning negligence
East Lansing, Michigan, USA and Evian-les-Bains, France—May 24,2019—American economist Patrick L. Anderson appears before a
group of international forensic economists this weekend to sound the
alarm on damages caused by AI programming errors and omissions.
NAFE International meets in Evian-les-Bains, France on the one year
anniversary of GDPR's implementation, May 25.
Mr. Anderson will present new findings that demonstrate the potential
for substantial damages stemming from mismanagement and complicity in the misuse of data in the fast-growing AI and machine learning application sector.
The work, which describes four main categories of damages resulting from improper implementation of AI principles, suggests a clear lack of awareness of and preparation for potential harm. These failures in management pose both organizational risks and risks to citizens around the globe.
"In at least some cases," Anderson explains, "AI is misused, misapplied,
conducted without proper supervision, implemented using data for which proper permission was never obtained, presented in a way that conceals its actual performance, or a combination of these."
To mitigate these risks, Anderson proposes the development of a methodology to evaluate AI applications and data. His proposal includes steps for conducting "AI audits," with the goal of preventing damages from ignorance and misuse that dwarf those caused by the deliberate distribution of malware.
