Metro Detroit Company’s Innovation in Rehabilitating Accident Victims is Subject of PBS Program Airing Across the Country

Southfield, Mich. (May 16, 2011) – The only Michigan-based business solely dedicated to the growing health care field of fitness therapy will gain national attention this month when the company is featured in a PBS program airing in markets around the country, including on Detroit Public Television’s WTVS Channel 56 at 5:30 p.m. on May 24, 2011.

Fitness Therapy Unlimited is one of the first in the nation to offer mobile fitness therapy services. The company creates custom rehabilitation, fitness and wellness programs for clients with mobility challenges in Metro Detroit and across lower Michigan. The PBS program “A Wider World” will feature the success stories of two Fitness Therapy Unlimited clients from the Metro Detroit area in an episode premiering in markets across the country the week of May 18.

Fitness Therapy Unlimited Founder, Greg Kirk, leveraged his experience in the fields of education, rehabilitation, and fitness to establish the company in 2006.

“Just a few years ago, no one was meeting the rehabilitation and fitness needs of individuals who had been injured in accidents or had complications from chronic diseases like muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis,” Kirk said. “We had to innovate by creating a business to fill the void. Our clients face some inherent transportation challenges, so we decided to bring our services right into their communities and in many cases directly into their homes.”

Today, Fitness Therapy Unlimited employs 17 people, including eight professional Fitness Therapists trained specifically to work with individuals facing injuries from automobile and work-related accidents or complications from chronic diseases. Supporting operations throughout the state, the company’s administrative office and staff are based in Southfield, Mich.

In addition to its custom fitness therapy programs, Fitness Therapy Unlimited is one of the only firms in Michigan offering mobile nutrition services provided by a Registered Dietician and mobile massage therapy provided by two Certified Massage Therapists. These services extend the company’s industry-leading mobile offerings, which also include both land-based and aquatic therapy, beyond simply rehabilitation and fitness to the improvement of overall health and wellness. Filming for the Fitness Therapy Unlimited episode of “A Wider World” took place in March 2011 at the Warren Community Center in Warren, Mich. and at the Macomb, Mich. home of Fitness Therapy Unlimited client Seth Coyne, who engages in land-based fitness therapy to address a spinal cord injury. Coyne has dramatically increased his endurance and core strength since starting fitness therapy in May 2009, enabling him to perform exercises and other activities that have increased his quality of life.

Also featured in the program is Macomb, Mich. resident Chris Felton, an above-the-knee amputee who participates in aquatic therapy with Fitness Therapy Unlimited professionals three times per week. Felton has increased his endurance in the pool from four laps per session to nearly 20 laps per session since beginning his program with Fitness Therapy Unlimited.

According to the creators of “A Wider World,” the show gives “hope to the challenged by showing them that there are others like them who have overcome obstacles and misconceptions in order to lead normal, fulfilling lives.”
