The Spine & Pain Institute of NY now Offers the MILD® Treatment Minimally Invasive Procedure for Treating Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Dr. Tim Canty, along with Dr. Kenneth B. Chapman and Dr. Sudhir Diwan of The Spine & Pain Institute of New York, now perform the MILD® procedure – a safe, new option which relieves pressure on the spine, increasing mobility and reducing lower back and leg pain in those suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis.Staten Island, NY, May 16, 2011 -- The Spine & Pain Institute of New York is pleased to announce the inclusion of the MILD® treatment to its wide range of pain management options. It is currently among only a handful of New York centers to offer this treatment. A minimally invasive procedure developed to treat lumbar spinal stenosis, the MILD® treatment is a revolutionary new process aimed to reduce spinal compression with a short procedure carried out under a local (or light) anesthetic.
The ambulatory procedure is approximately only an hour long, and patients are able to return home the same day. Utilizing only a minimal entry point, the procedure leaves no implants in the body. The resulting small incision requires no sutures and therefore only leaves minimal scarring.
The MILD® treatment has been extensively studied and has proven to be a very low-risk treatment with clinical studies reporting no major complications. The procedure is conducted using visual aids to guide the physician who uses specially designed MILD® devices. The treatment restores space in the spinal canal, relieving pressure on the nerves which leads to pain. Be cause the treatment is so precise and only removes the portions of bone and tissue which are compressing the nerves, MILD® treatment maintains the structural stability of the spine and surrounding muscle.
Recovery times for patients undergoing MILD® treatment are typically short, with most patients back to their usual routine within a few days. The rehabilitation is usually much faster than that of an open surgical procedure.
Dr. Tim Canty, along with Dr. Kenneth B. Chapman and Dr. Sudhir Diwan, are the center’s doctors who will be performing this procedure. They use the most advanced treatments available to treat spinal pain from degenerative discs, arthritis and spinal stenosis. The MILD®procedure will be another cutting-edge treatment to add to their already extensive non-surgical and interventional pain management options.
Board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiologists in Pain Management, Dr. Canty completed his training at two prestigious Harvard intuitions – The Massachusetts General Hospital and The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He then served as an Instructor of Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School prior to coming to New York.
He is a member of a number of U.S. societies such as the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. His international recognitions include being a member of the World Institute of Pain Society and a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice. He has also written several book chapters and journal articles on best pain management practices and regional block anesthesia.
