Efficient IT systems are the key to successful rail operations – this was one of the main findings of the IT for Rail management conference held in London on 16 and 17 May 2019. Around 30 top managers from renowned railway companies accepted the joint invitation from Arriva UK, MTR Crossrail and IVU Traffic Technologies.

Digitalisation is changing the railway sector from the bottom up. It has never been easier for railway companies to establish an end-to-end digital workflow and integrate all areas of operation – from the planner to the driver. The importance of integrated IT solutions for efficient rail services was therefore the focus of the two-day event, which took place for the fourth time this year.

After the event was kicked off by Oliver Bratton, Operations Director European Business at MTR, and Oliver Grzegorski, Division Manager Rail at IVU, the attendees joined the discussion with reports from their companies. In his address, Oliver Bratton spoke about the key role of modern technologies within railway companies, and Michel Thüring, Head of IT Production at SBB Cargo, highlighted the opportunities and challenges arising from the use of standard IT solutions in dynamic cargo operations.

The subsequent presentations by Dr Heiner Bente, Senior Advisor at BSL Management Consultants, and Prof. Ralf Borndörfer from Free University of Berlin dealt with the topics of efficiency and optimisation in the rail sector and highlighted the associated potential and prospects. Anna-Jane Hunter, Director North of England Rail at Network Rail, and Richard McClean, Managing Director at Grand Central, brought proceedings to a successful conclusion with their field reports.

“We are delighted that in ‘IT for Rail’ we have created a successful platform for international decision-makers in the rail industry to exchange views in exclusive company,” said Martin Müller-Elschner, CEO of IVU Traffic Technologies. “The exciting specialist presentations and frank discussions have once again made it clear that high-performance IT systems make a decisive contribution to increasing the efficiency of the entire operation.”

IVU Traffic Technologies has been working for over 40 years with more than 500 engineers to ensure punctual and reliable transport in the world’s metropolises. In growing cities, people and vehicles are constantly on the move – a logistical challenge that calls for intelligent and secure software systems. The integrated standard products of the IVU.suite work to plan, optimise and control the deployment of buses and trains, provide passengers with real-time information, create routes for parcel delivery services, and support businesses in choosing branch locations.
