Press release from: Adelphi University

GARDEN CITY, NY, May 2011—Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education is partnering for the seventh year with best-selling author Alice Hoffman to offer the 2011 Alice Hoffman Young Writers Retreat to high school juniors in the area. The Retreat will run from Monday, July 25 to Friday, July 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day in Adelphi’s Alumni House. High schools are encouraged to nominate one exemplary high school junior for the program. All admitted students will receive full scholarship to the program which includes tuition, materials, and daily lunch.

The Retreat offers approximately 30 high school juniors the opportunity to work hands-on with English Education graduate students, Adelphi faculty, and distinguished artists and writers in an intensive creative writing workshop. Participating students will be able to discuss, workshop, and receive individual feedback about their own pieces of fiction and non-fiction. Writing workshops will include activities that connect visual arts with writing, as well as written topics such as social justice and travel.

Alice Hoffman ’73 published her first novel, "Property Of," while studying under a Mirrellees Fellowship at the Stanford University Creative Writing Center. She received her M.A. in Creative Writing in 1974 and since then has gone on to publish a total of 18 novels, two books of short fiction, and eight books for children and young adults.

Her work has been published in over 20 translations and more than 100 foreign editions. Her novels have received mention as notable books of the year by the New York Times, and others. Her short fiction and non-fiction have appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe Magazine, and other prestigious magazines. In addition, her teen novel, "Aquamarine," was recently made into a major motion picture starring Emma Roberts. Ms. Hoffman also worked as a screenwriter and is the author of the original screenplay "Independence Day," a film starring Kathleen Quinlan and Diane Wiest.

Ms. Hoffman currently lives in Boston, and is a visiting research associate at the Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis University. She remains active within the community as an advocate for women’s and youth issues.
