Monarch Media Releases Learning Objects App for iPad

Press release from: Monarch Media, Inc.

Santa Cruz, Calif., May 10, 2011 – Monarch Media Inc. has released a new application for iPad® that demonstrates how open-standard learning objects (OSLO™) can create more effective, interactive mobile learning experiences. The OSLO app for iPad can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

“As mobile devices replace PCs as the way people most frequently access the Internet, authors of online learning content need new ways to develop their courses and trainings,” says Monarch Media CEO Claire Schneeberger. “OSLO offers them a way to include effective, engaging activities and assessments in their products for tablet devices and smart phones.”

Monarch Media’s OSLO is a library of learning objects that provides customizable, plug-in functionality essential for eLearning interactions, which includes:

• Self-assessments
• Matching and sequencing activities
• Fill-in-the-blank, true-false, and multiple-choice questions
• Flash cards
• Audio listening exercises
• Scenario-based activities

Because these learning objects are built using open standards technologies, such as HTML5, XML, and jQuery, they can be plugged into apps, ebooks, online courses, and trainings and be instantly accessible on common mobile devices, such as iPads and iPhones®. OSLO are built to load quickly and require no plug-ins or additional software downloads to run.

Online courses are growing increasingly popular in schools, colleges, and corporate training departments. They offer a more effective way to deliver education and learning anywhere, anytime. But new innovations and the rising popularity of mobile devices are rapidly transforming the eLearning landscape. Technology such as Flash®, which has been dominant for years for authoring and delivering eLearning, can’t be used on many popular mobile devices. OSLO provides a plug-and-play solution that will enable tablet products to include interactions.

The rise in online education is also leading both instructors and learners to demand better eLearning experiences. Researchers have found that including interactive activities and tests can boost learning results and information recall as well as increase engagement. “The latest studies show that assessments and interactive elements in an eLearning course improve learning,” says Schneeberger. “For example, students who engage in a practice test after reading a passage retain 50 percent more information a week later than those who don’t. We developed OSLO as a way to help content providers engage their readers and make tablet publications and trainings more memorable.”
