New-Generation Transdermal Drug Patches Relying on Technology Convergence to Achieve Targets
(Amherst, NH) – The therapeutic window open to transdermal drug patches has traditionally been defined by skin permeability and dose rate issues related to the limitations of passive drug diffusion through the stratum corneum. Formulation efforts and the use of excipients to improve drug migration have yielded only modest improvements. The result has been a drug delivery technology that has been confined to a handful of therapeutic markets dominated by small-molecule drugs.In recent years, efforts to open new indications to transdermal drug patches have led to the combining of two or more technologies into a single device. These new patch designs and formulation technologies are now on the verge of expanding the type and number of prescription therapies and treatments that can be effectively self-administered by patients and consumers.
Advances in synthetic materials and patch designs have led to patches that are more esthetically acceptable and that are capable of delivering sustained dosing of active compounds for several days in a smaller package. Converged patch technologies that are currently commercialized or in late-stage development include microprocessor-based devices, microstructures, phase transition polymers, hydrogels and prep-and-patch designs. These devices are creating opportunities for patch delivery in therapeutics ranging from metabolic diseases to neurology.
