Riderwood Retirement Community Residents to Observe Nation's 150th Anniversary of the Start of the Civil War in Unusual Way by Attending "Gone to Glory: Hollywood Imagines the Civil War" Continuing Education Class

SILVER SPRING, MD (April 20, 2011) – Residents of Riderwood retirement community will observe the nation’s 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War in a somewhat unusual way by attending “Gone with the Glory: Hollywood Imagines the Civil War, ” a class taught at their campus through a continuing education program with Prince George’s County Community College in Maryland.

The seven-week class will examine how Hollywood has portrayed the Civil War from "The Birth of a Nation" in 1915 through "Gods and Generals" in 2004. It will consider the changes in American society's attitudes as reflected in these films, particularly as they depict soldiers, women and African-Americans.

Each two-hour class, which is being taught by Professor Tim Mulligan, will be held June 14 - July 26, from 10 a.m. – noon, in the Encore Theater at Riderwood.

“Gone with the Glory: Hollywood Imagines the Civil War” is one of 36 different courses and 57 sections of classes offered this summer through the SAGE program with Prince George’s County Community College. A record 524 Riderwood residents have already enrolled in classes for the summer term.
