How does ENI approach digital transformation?

Globuc team spoke to Digital Executives at Eni to establish how do large oil & gas companies develop their digital transformation strategy, and specifically what is ENI’s strategy when it comes to developing digital agenda.

“We have a very large and broad scope of programmes within our digital agenda. First of all, among the major oil & gas companies, ENI is the only one where Chief Digital Officer (CDO), reports directly to the CEO.” - says Giacomo Silvestri, Group Digital Strategy, Innovation & Portfolio Management at Eni.

Giacomo is responsible for the overall digital strategy of the company - all the digital initiatives within the ENI group, including technology and digital solutions that fuel digital innovation.

“We position digital at the core of the company’s strategy” – adds Giacomo.
The digital agenda of Eni is composed of around 200 digital initiatives within the 4 years’ plan. According to Giacomo, Eni is currently applying all kinds of digital technologies – blockchain, AI/ML, advanced analytics, augmented reality, drones, industrial IoT. The scope of the digital projects run by ENI at the moment extends to 38 countries and around 1500 people who are directly involved in them. The projects lay all along the value chain – exploration, all the upstream business, drilling operations, even retail, and all the support functions have their own digitalization projects.

ENI has got a separate function called Digital Performance, which takes care of measuring results and impact of the projects, both in terms of spending and economic benefits.

When asked about the main difficulties the company is facing when implementing their digital agenda, Giacomo named being able to kick off digitalization projects fast, and, of course, change management.

The problem of having the digitalization projects kicking off as fast as they can is the reason why there is a special unit called Digital Delivery within Eni’s digital division. It is sort of digital factory where Eni prototypes and does the typical proof-of-concept with agile design and thinking. This helps the company to speed up projects, especially in the beginning of their existence.
Change Management is something that Elisabetta Purlalli – another interviewee of Globuc specializes at. Her role is the Head of Change Management at Eni, which means that the main focus of the unit that she is leading is to foster the change in the organization.

“The company introduced this unit because our CEO believes that there is a need for mindset change to fully capture digitalization moment” – says Elisabetta.

To tackle the culture change Eni hires digital experts (data scientists, digital natives) that serve as drivers of change. They introduce a different way of doing things within the teams that have a lot of competencies with respect to the oil and gas industry and knowledge of the business, but so to say, an old style of doing things. Adding these new digital experts goes hand in hand with new agile ways of working. To address certain issues Eni gathers teams so that digital natives and experienced industry professionals are sitting together and trying to tackle problems from new angles.
