NJ Musicians "Band" Together - Networking to Improve the NJ Music Scene

In November of 2005, Hillsborough NJ singer/songwriter Debbie Sansanelli founded The NJ Musicians Network, a Yahoo message board/email group that has since grown into a 140 member statewide network of musicians. Debbie is the leader of her own NJ cover and originals band, SunDog. An experienced businesswoman but a novice to the music scene in 2005, she called upon her business savvy and started NJMN in the hopes of learning more about how to successfully manage and promote her band through networking with other more experienced NJ musicians.

While the fact that the number of bands in New Jersey far surpasses the number of clubs offering live music naturally creates a competitive atmosphere, Debbie instead chose to view other bands as valuable friends and allies, thus setting the tone for NJMN. Member bands support each other by getting out to see each other’s shows and by sharing information that runs the gamut from vocal and recording techniques, promotional ideas, and even which clubs treat bands well and which to be wary of. NJMN has also become an excellent resource for members to find other musicians, and to sell and trade instruments and equipment.

With interest in NJMN growing and the number of member bands increasing over the past two years, Debbie decided to create The Jersey Bands online directory to help promote the working bands in the group. She noticed that the vast majority of online band directories offer only brief alphabetic listings, making the search for a band for a private party or club difficult at best. In sharp contrast, The Jersey Bands directory has large listings that include color photos and logos, a description of the band, and a link to their website. In addition, bands with upcoming shows are so noted weekly. To make it easy for people to find the type of band they are looking for, bands are categorized by type of music such as Rock, Rock/Pop, Blues/Rock, Country/Country Rock, and Jazz/World Music.
