Staff from Surrey-based Cleankill Pest Control are celebrating after appearing on national television.
The pest experts were thrilled when they were contacted recently by well-known TV presenter Sarah Beeny to solve a clothes moth problem in a London woman’s house.
Sarah asked Cleankill to help architect Kate Grose whose clothes were being eaten away in her two-bed maisonette. Cleankill Managing Director Paul Bates was filmed showing where to look for the pests all over the house and, most importantly, how to get rid of them.
Moths cause hundreds of thousands of pounds a year in damage to clothes and furnishings. Paul pointed out that it is actually the larvae of moths that do the damage: “After the adult has laid her eggs on the threads of clothes, the larvae hatch out at anywhere between four and 21 days, depending on the temperature. The newly hatched larvae are about 1mm long and will start to spin a small, silken tube using some of the fibres of the fabric they are eating. They will eat from many sources including furs, woollens, animal bristles on brushes and the felt inside pianos! In loft spaces they will find old stored clothing, carpets and even bird feathers.”
The programme called Help! My House is Infested aired on Channel 4 at 8:00pm on April 18 and was watched by millions of people across the UK. In this one-off special, Sarah and a team of expert pest-busters helped homeowners suffering from serious cases of infestation.
At a time when infestations are reaching epidemic levels and when people may be considering cancelling their pest control contract due to financial woes, Sarah and her team of experts uses the latest technology and gadgets to seek out and destroy the pests that are causing damage not only to the homes, but also to people's lives, health and wallets.
Managing Director Paul Bates said: “We were really pleased to work with Sarah Beeny and her team to help solve the moth problem for Kate. It was a great opportunity for us and we were all excited to watch ourselves on TV. Since Help! My house is infested has aired we have had a surge in enquiries, specifically relating to mice, moths and bedbugs and also a significant increase in website hits. I think the show has highlighted for people the health implications of living with infestations and prompted them to act on theirs sooner rather than later.”
