Three Suckas in a linen bag

Three Suckas in a linen bag

A new range of smart, reusable drinking straws named Sucka launched this week are aimed at slashing the UK’s plastic consumption for less than the cost of a cup of coffee.

The exstrawdinarily cool, colourful metallic straws are the latest eco-friendly accessories sweeping social feeds. In fact, Brit influencers Emma Louise Connolly, Gabrielle Caunesil and Chloe Lloyd have all been spotted clutching their Sucka’s in recent weeks.

Founders of Sucka, fashion photographer Fabiana Delcanton and her other half, graphic designer Lewis Topsom, came up with the upmarket, trend-led, reusable straw concept. They were spurred into action on hearing the UK government announce last year that Brits threw away 8.5 billion straws annually - that’s equivalent to 130 straws a year, per person.

Delcanton said: “That is just a horrendous figure and there really is no need for all those plastic straws to be chucked away. Certainly, not if there is a smart reusable alternative – one that can be washed, easily carried around whilst managing to look fashionable at the same time. That was when we came with up the idea of Sucka.”

The cute and quirky sucking devices, aim to help eliminate single plastic use, while looking sleek and stylish in doing so.

Delcanton adds: “Sucka’s mission is to help individuals and businesses drastically reduce their use of single-use plastic drinking straws. In fact, before you head out the door we want to make grabbing your Sucka as routine for you as brushing your teeth.”

Despite their main eco-mission, Sucka try to steer clear from the stereotypical, guilt-driven, alternative plastic brands. Whilst the perils of plastic is their main driving force, Sucka aims to spread a positive message that ‘doing good can look and feel good at the same time.’

The dishwasher-friendly and super lightweight straws are made from food-grade stainless steel. They are rust-free and don’t contain any ‘nasty’ chemicals such as BPA, phthalates and lead. Steel was the final material of choice since glass was considered too fragile, bamboo more difficult to keep clean and silicone expensive to manufacture.

Sucka straws are available in a range of playful colours and two different styles, depending on the drink being consumed. There is, for instance, the slim, sleek and stylish Golden Gulper, the industrial-looking Silver Slurper, the bold, eye-catching Starlight Sipper and the Mini Silver Slurper, perfect for cocktails.

The straws are easy to carry around in their delightful linen pull-string bags, which can simply slip into your handbag, messenger bag or jacket pocket.

Delcanton declares: “These are more than just a sipping device, these straws aim to be your latest fashion accessory, think phone, keys, lipstick and…straw!“

With your help, Sucka’s ambition is to get these stylish little sippers in the bag of every millennial across the country, with the message ‘ stop being a sucker for plastic and start being a Sucka!’

An individual or set of Sucka straws can be bought online via the company’s website www.suckastraws.com They retail at £2.99 each and £9.99 for a pack of three, plus postage.
