GIO reassures flood-affected customers
Major insurer GIO would like to reassure customers affected by recent weather events who hold personal home and contents policies that they are covered for all forms of flood.Reports of insurers denying flood claims may unnecessarily alarm GIO customers.
Flood cover has been a standard feature of GIO’s personal home and contents insurance policies since 2008, and covers any flood damage caused by rain – including riverine flood,flash flooding, rainwater run-off and storm.
GIO’s personal home and contents insurance also covers damage from tsunami and bursting water pipes, dishwashers and washing machines.
GIO’s contact centres are dealing with significantly increased call numbers, following flooding in Queensland and Victoria, and bushfires in Western Australia, and some customers may experience delays. Information about policies is available online and claims can also be lodged 24 hours a day at http://www.gio.com.au.
GIO customers who have already lodged claims can be confident that their policies offer protection from flood damage.
If a GIO customer has any doubts about their level of cover, GIO advises that they should lodge a claim to ensure that they receive all assistance to which they are entitled.
GIO has received approximately 200 flood claims following Victoria’s floods in January. The vast majority has been assessed, with some properties still inaccessible. GIO is in contact with customers whose properties are still to be assessed and are supporting them where possible, including by providing emergency accommodation and emergency payments as appropriate.
