Preparation in an Infection Control Department for a Joint Commission Survey

Bellevue, Wash. – Wolters Kluwer Health announced today that Pharmacy OneSource, software-as-a-service provider of Sentri7, a real-time infection prevention surveillance, documentation and reporting system, is hosting a complimentary webinar with Brenda Helms, RN, BSN, MBA/HCM, CIC on "Joint Commission Readiness for Infection Control."

Helms will discuss preparing for a Joint Commission survey, spending time on the risk assessment, evaluation and plan. Different approaches to rounding will be discussed. She will also go over the processes in place that helped her facility to achieve a deficiency-free Joint Commission survey. Helms will also go over the importance of a culture of readiness and how persistent readiness – whether TJC is expected to show up or not – can reduce the stress related to a survey. She will also relay some key elements that put into place during the survey to help with the success of the survey.

About the Presenter: Brenda Helms, RN, BSN, MBA/HCM, CIC, started in the health care industry as an EMT in 1989. She received her Paramedic Certificate in 1993 and an Associate’s Degree in Paramedicine in 1994. She taught Paramedicine from 1995 to 1997 at North Central Texas College in Gainesville, Texas while working full time at Cooke County EMS. She was the Infection Control Officer for the Department for 5 years. In 1997, she received her ADN from North Central Texas College and began working as an RN in the Emergency Department. In 2006 she received my BSN from the University of Phoenix and received her MBA/HCM degree from University of Phoenix in 2008. She received her Certification in Infection Control in 2010. She has worked the majority of her nursing career in the Emergency Department and has spent the last 5 years in Infection Prevention. Currently, she works for a partially-physician-owned cardiovascular surgical hospital. She has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Society of Infection Prevention and Control for the previous three years. She has also been active in the local APIC D/FW Chapter as Program/Education Chair and currently serves as President Elect.
