Healthy Recipes In Schools?

Inspiring to see that some schools such as Kensington Elementary School in Kensignton actually take the initiative to bring about healthy recipes and healthy eating. Just this week the school did a school wide contest in which students ranging from kinder to 5th grade participated.

Kensington Elementary enrolled in Mrs. Obama's "Let's Move" initiative which focuses on fighting childhood obesitity and hopes to bring about healthy eating in all children.
Some of the healthy recipes included in the results of the contest included healthy smoothies, meatballs, fiesta corn, corn bread and even an apple dessert parfait. What was really interesting about the recipes, besides being healthy is that they all had their own "flare" to them. They seemed to have taken a style & taste of their own, while focusing on being healthy.

Boucher said when food is prepared at home we are aware of how much sugar and fat we are putting into something and can make proper adjustments and substitutes from the "three major bad foods," which are "white sugar, white flour, and saturated fat."

What I believe is amazing about this entire process is how much involvement there truly was in the entire community. The parents, kids, administrators and many other participants made this healthy contest a wonderful experience. It certainly would be nice to have a lot more schools have the same initiative and make a difference for all the kids in our schools. And it can be as simple as having a contest such as the one that took place at Kensignton Elementary.
