The SIO (Saxonian Institute of Surface Mechanics, siomec.de) has published a paper about a quick and simple tool for tectonic earth plate simulations which is completely based on analytical models. This tool enables one to study the effects of an earthquake in advance.

Abstract

In the work completely analytical modeling will be used for the simulation of contact induced stress and strain distributions of tectonic plate problems. It will be shown that layered character of the plates, time dependent material behavior, anisotropy and a potential fluid foundation can be taken into account effectively. By the means of multiple load dots and contact ensembles even very complex load distributions with rather arbitrary normal, lateral, tilting and twisting loads can be considered and their effects on the displacement and stress distribution can be studied. Fracture, release with subsequent and sudden stress relaxation can be simulated with impact approaches. Shock waves and ordinary oscillations are simulated by an analytic extension of the quasi static solutions. Effects on buildings, plants (especially atomic plants), vehicles, humans and so on and thus estimates for insurance limits can be studied by consideration of the worst case displacements and oscillations of the assumed / simulated loading and impact distributions.

The Saxonian Institute of Surface Mechanics (SIO) is a private modern research and service institute, which is specialized in mechanical and tribological characterization and optimization of arbitrary structured surfaces (e.g. nano coatings or human-compatible coatings etc.). These covers also the large topic of simulation of real loading problems in extreme application situations. SIO does its own research as well as co-operative research together with well-known universities worldwide. These research activities are mainly funded by rendering corresponding services and selling software to companies (e.g. in the sector of surface coating processing and surface treatment).
