SLR supporting Mauritania in the sustainable development of geosciences and mineral resources.
Environmental firm SLR Consulting is working on behalf the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in West Africa, to facilitate the restructuring of the country’s key public geoscience bodies.Part of the World Bank’s PRISM programme , the project aims to assist in the mineral exploration and sustainable development of the country’s extensive mining resources.
Providing technical assistance such as mine auditing, SLR has carried out a diagnostic assessment of corporate requirements, core skills, current responsibilities and accountabilities in light of recent changes in Mauritania’s mineral legislation. SLR is now evaluating the human resource requirements, specific training needs and the most effective structures to deliver the overall reform.
Dr. Deirdre Lewis, who is based in SLR’s Dublin office said: “The Mauritanian authorities are keen to develop their natural resources in a way that will attract much needed mining investment. This project aims to increase the in-country capacity of the OMRG (l’Office Mauritanien de Recherches Géologiques) to administer geological information, exploration and mining licenses with the aim of benefiting the citizens of Mauritania in the long-term.
SLR Ireland has worked extensively in francophone West and North Africa for over 20 years in both the public and private sectors, primarily in mineral exploration, institutional strengthening and mine auditing projects and recently provided geological support to a private mine development in Mauritania. In addition, SLR has worked with the EU and World Bank to promote inward investment to the emerging mining sector of the region.
