Switch from surveillance to protection underway for unmanned aerial vehicles could render
No other weapon has changed the way the US military wages war in recent years like the unmanned aerial vehicle. Since 2006, the amount of time spent on operations involving unmanned systems have grown from about 165,000 hours to more than 550,000 hours annually. And the increasing effectiveness of unmanned aerial systems is changing the way infrastructure protection and missile defence globally.
Peter Sapaty, Director of Distributed Simulation for the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine explains that constantly flying unmanned sensors and effectors at different altitudes can alter their primary of surveillance to protection instead.
“Constantly flying unmanned sensors and effectors at different altitudes can patrol national borders, oversee safety of nuclear plants, dams and military installations, discover and attack missile launches from neighbouring states as well as at their final stages from all over the world,” said Sapaty.
“They can withstand hostile UAS and cruise missiles and their swarms collectively, nationwide, having global awareness of the situations due to their distributed networked intelligence, runtime optimizing the use of available resources and responses to asymmetric threats and attacks. They can be effectively integrated with directed energy weapons, and will also be able to make autonomous local and global decisions in most critical and time-dependant situations, also after indiscriminate damages to manned infrastructures,” he added.
Peter Sapaty is not only speaking but also leading a workshop at Unmanned Systems Asia 2011.
Unmanned Systems Asia 2011 conference aims to provide a broad vision for all future tri-services missions to develop, organise and employ unmanned systems across the full spectrum of their operations, it also intends to lay a foundation for continuous learning and analysis.
