Big Ears at K.E.M. Hospital, Pune & Mukul Madhav Foundation organized an event to felicitate the donors for the “Gift of Hearing”

BIG Ears at K.E.M Hospital, Pune, in association with the Mukul Madhav foundation organized a special programme on the evening of Friday, 11th March, 2011 at JWT Marriot to felicitate donors for their kind support towards delivering the gift of hearing to the 100 Cochlear Implant Children.

Dr. Neelam Vaid, Implanting Surgeon and Head of Big Ears at KEM Hospital, Pune spoke to the donors and guests about the reason and importance of the Cochlear Implants, and the benefits of implantation early. “Hearing is a very important part of what we are. It affects our personality. Early detection of hearing disability and an implant at a young age helps a person go through fewer difficulties while adjusting to a life with sound”, she said.

Dr. Neelam Vaid introduced every child in the performance that was choreographed and trained by Shiamak Davar’s Victory Foundation. In her opinion, “this is a way for us to let these children know how special they are, and how important they are to society.”

Dr. Vaid said, “In India, every year more than 30,000 babies are born with a hearing impairment out of which approximately 1000 get a Cochlear Implant. We, at KEM, are fortunate to have generous donors who came forward to donate in kind for bringing the joy of sound into the lives of these 100 children. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve this milestone without the generous support of our institutional and private donors. This show is a medium through which all donors and their families, past, present and future, are thanked and celebrated.”

Mrs. Ritu Chhabria, Managing Trustee, Mukul Madhav Foundation said, “By donating towards this noble cause, donors can bring a change to life of these children and help them lead a normal childhood in mainstream society.”

Mr. Arun Saxena, a nationally recognized mime artist, who was born deaf and dumb, performed a mono-act on the difficulties of living the life of an impaired individual. His act also threw light on the importance of getting an implant earlier on in life.
