The exact cause of vitiligo is not known as yet. Most of the dermatologists believe that Vitiligo may be an autoimmune disease. It is also quite promising that it can be hereditary also as in one or more genes may make a person more likely to get the disorder. Some researchers who have conducted a detailed study on this disorder think that the melanocytes destroy themselves in the process, which causes white patches on the skin. Others think that a single event such as sunburn or emotional distress can also cause vitiligo. But none of these events have not yet been proven to be the exact cause of this skin disorder i.e. vitiligo.
Symptoms of Vitiligo
Most of you must be curious to find out what the symptoms of this disorder are and how would you be able to jump up to the conclusion that yes, a person is now suffering from vitiligo. The answer to this question is that white patches on the skin are the main signs and symptoms of vitiligo. These patches are more common in areas where the skin is exposed to the sun. These patches can be formed anywhere such as they may appear on the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Other common areas for white patches are:
• The armpits and groin (where the leg meets the body)
• Around the mouth
• Eyes
• Nostrils
• Navel
• Genitals
• Rectal areas.
People with vitiligo often experience change in color of their hair. Their hair turns grey from whatever colour their hair is. Those with dark skin may notice a loss of color inside their mouths also. These are some of the basic signs and symptoms, which are to be considered an alarm that a person is now a victim of Vitiligo. Once you start seeing these signs you should start taking an appropriate action because that way it will be easier to handle it in time.
Who can be affected by Vitiligo?
In the United States, 1 to 2 million people have this skin disorder and usually people develop this disorder before they turn 40. This disease can affect anyone and everyone without any difference of race and sex. People with assured autoimmune diseases such as hyperthyroidism are more likely to get vitiligo than people who don't have any autoimmune diseases.
Vitiligo can affect anyone just like that. There are chances that a person who is taking healthy foods and is living a very healthy lifestyle can also suffer from this skin disorder. Vitiligo may also run in families. It can be hereditary also and children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop vitiligo but the necessarily is not the case every time that a parent has a Vitiligo so the child eventually would have it.
