The Issue: Print media is transforming. Producers need ways to transition to a post-print media world.

TJP&A's President, Dr. Tom Piwowar, explains…

"We see magazines morphing into rich, interactive applications such as the iPad editions of Wired, The New Yorker, The Daily, Virgin's Project, and Martha Stewart Living. Designers are also being asked to add interactive features to PDFs and to create animated web ads."

"As the future unfolds, some designers are growing anxious after discovering that Flash is not their cup of tea or that Flash development takes too long."

"Existing publication production staff need to acquire new skills as the need for their existing skills diminishes."

The Solution: Dr. Piwowar, will demonstrate one speedy and uncomplicated route to interactive and animated designs using familiar skills that producers already possess, using Adobe® InDesign® CS5's new Interactive Workspace.

"InDesign CS5 comes to the rescue with new interactive features that meet most publisher's needs in a way that non-programming designers can easily master," says Dr. Piwowar. He also notes that designers should get an early start on the future by mastering these skills now rather than later. "There will be plenty of other things to learn as digital magazines become commonplace."

The Demonstration: Dr. Piwowar will show how InDesign CS5's new Interactive Workspace can be used to quickly produce impressive interactive and animated projects without need of any programming. This presentation will be made at the March 16 meeting of the Washington D.C. InDesign User Group.

Context: With more than 15 million iPads and 8 million Kindles sold in 2010 and with eReader and tablet sales projected at 55 million units in 2011, publishers are facing a swift transition to electronic delivery of their publications.

To assist with the transition TJP&A recently introduced a series of hands-on classes and workshops called the "Digital Publications Series." The series includes the topic of this presentation: "InDesign Interactivity & Animation Workshop." The workshop covers how to incorporate animation and interactivity into such projects as digital magazines for the iPad and other tablet computers, animated on-line advertising, and animated infographics. The workshop's first session was a sell out and garnered excellent student feedback. The "Digital Publications Series" also includes classes to aid book publishers' migration to eBooks for the iPad, Kindle, Nook, and other eReaders and tablet computers. TJP&A is at the forefront of this tech transition. Students are traveling to Washington from east-coast cities to attend these workshops.
