Worcester Lays Down an Eco-Challenge for Scouts

03-01-2011 03:57 PM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: Worcester Bosch, Consumer Group

Encouraging Cub Scouts across the country to ‘go green’ and think about the impact we are all having on our environment, Worcester, Bosch Group has joined forces with the Scout Association to set the latest Global Challenge Award badge.

Helping ambitious adventurers to consider easy and fun ways that they can protect the environment at home and on a wider scale, eco-minded Cub Scouts are now able to tackle the four-part challenge badge; which covers topics from energy and water saving through to recycling - showing that being energy-aware can start at any age.

Worcester has also created an accompanying activity pack to help guide Cubs Scouts through each section of the badge. Setting interesting and practical challenges along the way and giving clear information, those taking part can see for themselves how easy it can be to reduce their impact on the planet.

Throughout the four easy-to-follow sections, Cubs are asked to consider ways to save energy in the home, look at the benefits of renewable energy such as solar panels, why and what can be recycled and easy ways we can all save water on a daily basis, through a series of exciting experiments, questions and internet research. They even get to write – and stick to - their own water saving pledge.

Simon Carter, from The Scout Association said:

“As Worcester is one of the leading experts in energy-efficient heating products we are delighted to be working with them on this latest challenge award. The activity pack Worcester has created to accompany the badge is a fantastic tool to get cubs involved through hands-on activities and interesting questions that mean cubs not only enjoy taking part in Worcester’s Global Challenge Award badge but also have an understanding of why we need to be considering these topics.

“As with many of our challenge badges, the latest Global Challenge Award badge takes a number of weeks to complete, with work being done both in their group and at home - so getting the badge gives a real achievement for those involved. The environment is so important and there are many things we can all be doing to cut down on wasted energy and water through to reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away, and we hope knowing the different that can be made, often very simply, will be habits our Cub Scouts take on as they grow older too. “

Sue Pennington, consumer brand manager at Worcester, Bosch Group said:

“Energy-efficiency is something that is close to our hearts at Worcester and part of all of the products we make. As with many things in life, it is all well and good for people to talk about saving energy but it is really the actions you take in your daily life which will make a difference. The fact that this ‘doing’ part that is so crucial to changing minds and opinions is why Worcester wanted to get involved with the Cub Scouts and this particular challenge badge. Simply turning off lights, not leaving electrical items on standby and thinking about how much water you are using are great habits to have from a young age, and we are delighted to be helping set this thought process in motion.”

“We hope those taking part enjoy working their way through the experiments, word searches and internet tasks, which will certainly put them through their paces!”

Since 1962, when Worcester pioneered domestic oil-fired boilers, the company’s commitment to excellence hasn’t changed.

That commitment has only strengthened since Worcester became part of the Bosch Group - one of the world’s leading names in high-end technology.

Today, many years and thousands of boilers later, Worcester is the market leader in domestic heating and hot water systems. It’s a name that stands for reliability, quality, efficiency and value for money.

We’re a leading British company, employing more than 2,000 people at our headquarters and manufacturing plants in Worcester and Clay Cross in Derbyshire. That also includes a network of over 300 service engineers and over 80 technically trained field sales managers.
