Best Snowpack in Years Secures Far and Away Adventures’ Rafting Departures on Jarbidge/Bruneau in Lower 48’s Wildest Region

SUN VALLEY, ID, Feb. 29, 2011 – Heralding dates for accessing the Jarbidge/Bruneau come spring is akin to the excitement of fall’s first Beaujolais Nouveau. Both require a good year.

Paddlers can get onto Nevada’s northerly free-flowing Jarbidge/Bruneau River system for only a few weeks each spring but when and for how long is determined by snowpack. No dams control the flow of this remote river system.

“This will be an excellent season based on above average snowpack,” predicts Steve Lentz, the owner of Far and Away Adventures who has explored this river since 1983. He added that this trip offers one of the longest continuous stretches of white water commercially run the US with rapids rating Class III to Class IV+.

Guests access a primitive and isolated 3.2-million- acre wild environment, the most remote wilderness in the lower 48 (named the Bruneau/Jarbidge Rivers Wilderness), after departing the urbanities of either Sun Valley or Boise, ID. Launch is at an historic stage stop on the old Boise-Elko stagecoach run.

The Jarbidge/Bruneau has been federally protected as a Wild and Scenic River along with the canyons whose walls fringe the river for nearly 70 miles, sometimes reaching a height of 1,200 feet and offering needle and hoodoo formations dating to 10 or 12 million years ago when the last super-volcano erupted in the region.

The area is home to the oldest trees (Juniper) in Idaho. Over these, golden eagles and prairie falcons soar in the thermals. Migratory birds on the Pacific flyway make their presence known. Spring wildflowers are at their profuse best.

Tented camping is in intimate grottos of cedar and juniper.
