Adelphi History Department Holds 38th Annual High School Social Studies and History Teacher’s Conference on April 4, 2011

The Adelphi University Department of History will hold its 38th Annual Adelphi History Conference on Monday, April 4, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. in Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY. This year’s topic is “Teaching Immigration.” The free conference will feature a Pulitzer Prize-winning keynote speaker, presentations from Adelphi faculty, and an open forum on how to teach immigration.

The keynote speech to be delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Mirta Ojito is entitled “Immigrants and Their Tales: Personalizing Immigration.” Dr. Ojito joined the New York Times staff in 1996 and was a member of the New York Times team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for national reporting with a series entitled “How Race is Lived in America.” In 1999, she won a Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors for foreign reporting on stories about Cuba. Dr. Ojito’s first book, Finding Manana: A Memoir of a Cuban Exodus, based upon her experience as a Mariel boatlift refugee, was published in 2005 by the Penguin Press.

After Dr. Ojito’s presentation, Adelphi faculty members who have published on immigration will talk. Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Margaret Gray will present, “Connecting Food and Immigration” and Professor of History and Director of Adelphi’s African, Black, and Caribbean Studies program, Dr. Marsha J. Darling, will present on “Teaching Strategies for Ethnic Studies.” Lastly, an open forum on teaching immigration will offer everyone in attendance an opportunity to share their challenges, successes, and failures in teaching the subject.
