Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Turner McGarity, former deputy commandant of the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets (JROTC) is the recipient of a Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust Award.

The award was presented during a Jan. 30 ceremony at Friendship Baptist Church by Robert Blackwell, president of the Minority Veterans of Texas and POW/MIA chairman for the Congressional Black Caucus.

McGarity, who entered the Army in 1965, served 25 years on active duty, serving in Vietnam, Germany and with 5th Army Headquarters at Fort Sam Houston, where he was Sergeant Major for the Chief of Staff, 5th U.S. Army, and served on the Inspector General Inspection Team responsible for the inspection of Army units in a nine-state area. From 1993 to his retirement in 2009, McGarity served the TMI Corps in teaching and leadership development. He is a member of the Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers, F Troop 9th Cavalry, which tells the history of the African American buffalo soldiers who served in the Old West after the Civil War.

The Congresssional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust was founded 22 years ago to hold an annual issues forum in Washington D.C., and the award was established in 1990 to recognize outstanding national and community commitment to African American veterans.
