Tonya Phifer Hosts the Inaugural Tonya Phifer's Women's Invitational Basketball Tournament

[Charlotte, NC] – Tonya Phifer will host the 1st Annual Tonya Phifer’s Women’s Invitational Basketball Tournament April 30 – May 1, 2011 at Harding University High School (2001 Alleghany St., Charlotte, NC 28208). Games will be played from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

This tournament could prove to be a meeting place for some of Division I and II’s best players that either did or did not play or still have aspirations to play professionally. With 8 team slots and a multitude of talent in the Charlotte area, this tournament is sure to turn into a who’s who in women’s basketball!

The tournament will feature several collegiate athlete cameos, high energy, fast paced basketball, and enthusiastic spectatorship. Sponsorships for this tournament are still available. Tonya Phifer was born and raised in Charlotte, NC. After playing for Victory Christian and UNC-Charlotte where she still holds the points scored and assist records there, Phifer contemplated playing professional basketball, but instead became a business owner. She decided to remain in her community and continue to give back with her time and talents. She has played in recreational leagues in the Charlotte area since her graduation from UNC-Charlotte. Creating this tournament has been a work in progress for several years and now it’s finally happening! “I believe this tournament will provide a social, recreational and athletic outlet to people in this community. We set the admission at $1 or a canned good so that this would remain a community event that everyone could attend.” said Phifer.
