Project Blue Planet & National Zoo Help Kids Improve the Oceans; Get a Chance to Try Scuba Diving

Washington, DC—Kids in the U.S. can have a major impact on stopping the destruction of our ocean ecosystems. That’s the message from a new educational initiative—Project Blue Planet. The effort, created by the National Zoo, has launched a new outreach video inviting students to compete for an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC.

Blue Planet Scuba (http://www.blueplanetdc.com) will provide a chance for the winning team to “discover scuba”—taking their first breaths under water here in the nation’s capitol.

“We’re thrilled to help the National Zoo with Project Blue Planet. For us it’s a natural connection—we have such respect for the Zoo and a commitment to teaching people of all ages to love the underwater world,” said Colette Corbin, science education coordinator for Blue Planet Scuba.

Project Blue Planet is a contest that challenges kids nationwide to get their schools and communities involved to improve the environment for marine life. The National Zoo team is working with teams of students and faculty at schools to help them create projects to reduce waste, improve energy use, and create healthier environment for students and local wildlife.

To be eligible, projects must begin after September 1, 2010 and end by April 30, 2011. Winners will be announced in June 2011. Judges from the National Zoo, Whole Foods Market and others will pick the project that best creates change—awarding a grand prize of a free trip for four students and their chaperones to Washington, DC to visit the new seal exhibit.
