Complex pricing for mobile phone packages obscure high cost of international texting

With Easter approaching fast and holiday makers using their mobile phones abroad, international SMS texting has established itself as the most profitable source of income for mobile service providers in the UK after voice calling. Enthusiasm for SMS texting is not abating during the holiday season as the figures of the Mobile Data Association are showing*.

The program 10pText.co.uk is taking advantage of the increasing number of phones enabled to use the mobile web and the equally increasing desire of consumers to use SMS text messaging.

45.6 million unique users were recorded as having used their phones for downloads and browsing the mobile Internet in the UK throughout October, November and December 2006.

The average price charged by UK mobile service providers for SMS sent from the UK to other countries is typically 35p. The charge to send a text message from a European country back to the UK averages 50p.
