First Privacy by Design based Social Network

Eppstein, February 2, 2011. The International Data Privacy Day is over but the subject of privacy on the internet prevails – one of many reasons to take a look at the first Social Network based on Privacy by Design: https://www.pidder.com.
Facebook and other "free" services are not actually without cost. The users pay with their data – more often than not being unaware of this. As a consequence, those companies know friends and preferences of their users in great detail and selling the data, e.g. to advertisers, is their business model. Therefore the users become the product and are no longer the customers of such free services.
Now there is an alternative for people who prefer control of their own data and a more focused way to share.
Privacy – a valuable good worth protecting
The makers of pidder believe that more meaningful relationships are the future of social media. Quality rather than quantity is the key to that. They want to facilitate this with pidder, considering the following:

- There is no interest, commercial or otherwise, in the user's data. This is guaranteed in the Terms & Conditions.
- A host-proof approach ensures the service provider does not know that data in the first place.
- pidder can be used completely anonymously, also with anonymous payment methods for the Premium Edition.
- There is no recording of the user's IP address, not even in the log files.
- Each user can completely delete their own data whenever they want.
- The default is always maximum privacy.
- All communication is encrypted, both transport (https) as well as end-to-end (RSA/AES).
- Data can be categorized according to its confidentiality.
- Contacts can be assigned into groups according to the trust I put into them.
- Sharing data always requires explicit user interaction.

As well as social networking where the users stay in control of their own data and only share it with those they deliberately choose, pidder is a place to manage passwords and logins easily and securely with quicklogins. An identity management service allowing the use of pseudonyms is provided.
In the long run, the makers envision pidder as a building block within a global infrastructure that will provide user-centric identity management. Every user will be able to gracefully manage, in every given situation, what information they wish to reveal about themselves depending on the respective interaction.
