Press release from: Waspinator Ltd

A Yorkshire company is urging lovers of the great outdoors to ‘live and let live’ when it comes to dealing with one of summer’s most annoying pests – the wasp.

Its new product, the Waspinator, creates wasp-free zones without killing wasps and without using any chemicals, making it both insect and eco-friendly.

The Waspinator is a unique wasp repellent in the form of an artificial wasps’ nest. When visiting wasps see the Waspinator hanging up, they believe another wasp colony has taken over the surrounding area. Being very territorial, wasps will keep away from existing nests because they are afraid of being attacked by the resident wasps. It’s as simple as that!

Richard Piddocke of Waspinator Ltd says “Waspinator is based upon the principle that prevention is always better than cure! Conventional wasp traps aim to deal with wasps by first attracting and then killing them – but why do this when you can just prevent them from coming near you in the first place? When a wasp is trapped and dying it emits a pheromone which acts like a panic signal, and other wasps will come to see what the problem is. As even an average-sized wasps’ nest contains at least two thousand wasps you will never completely deal with the problem with traps, so keeping them away is a more effective solution.”

Waspinator is the ideal ‘green’ solution, repelling wasps without the use of any toxic chemicals that could be harmful to pets or other garden wildlife, and has been described by the World Wildlife Fund as ‘a product which enhances outdoor living without harming the environment’.

In addition to domestic settings, the Waspinator is perfect for preventing wasp invasions in many other places such as boats, tents and caravans, as well as the outdoor areas of pubs and bars. Requiring no cleaning or maintenance, it is a far more cost-effective solution than more traditional pest control methods. It’s also very portable and can easily be taken on picnics or on holiday.

Richard says “The very best time to install a Waspinator in the garden is in the spring, when wasps start to build their nests for the season. Not only will it deter them from establishing a nest in the area, they will also be discouraged from visiting it to look for food and building materials too. This is of particular benefit if there is anything that may be really tempting to wasps such as fruit trees. Even if you leave it until the summer to install a Waspinator it will still keep wasps away unless there is a nest very close by. Wasps perform a useful job by being natural pest controllers themselves – they kill aphids and caterpillars which attack plants. Ideally we should refrain from killing wasps, but aim to live in harmony with them whilst keeping them at bay by using a Waspinator!”

Ten interesting facts about wasps
1. The two main species of wasp in the UK are the Common Wasp (Vespula Vulgaris) and the German Wasp (Vespula Germanica).

2. Annoying as they are, wasps are very interesting insects with a highly-developed social structure.

3. Wasps are actually very beneficial insects, killing harmful garden pests such as aphids and caterpillars.

4. Wasps are very visual insects and can even recognise each other.

5. Wasps have several ways of communicating, including chemical, mechanical and visual signals.

6. Throughout winter the queen wasps hibernate in cocoons having been fertilised by male wasps beforehand. In spring they emerge and look for suitable nesting sites to build their colonies.

7. Wasps are not naturally aggressive to humans but high temperatures and overcrowding in their nests during the summer can make them bad-tempered!

8. There are typically thousands of inhabitants in the average wasps’ nest, so don’t attempt to remove one yourself – seek professional advice.

9. Late in the season wasps can become drunk as a result of eating too much fermenting fruit, and that is when they are most likely to sting!

10. Unlike a bee, a wasp can sting many times.
