First Hearing Held in DePuy Hip Replacement Federal Lawsuits
The federal court overseeing the DePuy hip replacement lawsuits pending against DePuy Orthopaedics held a status conference yesterday. Lawyers from the consumer injury law firm Bernstein Liebhard LLP and a number of other law firms which have also filed cases on behalf of those suffering injuries from the recalled DePuy hip implants attended the hearing.The hearing came shortly after the federal lawsuits concerning DePuy hip replacements were consolidated by the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) before United States District Court Judge David A. Katz of the Northern District of Ohio.
The hearing yesterday focused on which lawyers would serve on the plaintiffs’ steering committee. The lawyers at the hearing, most of whom represent plaintiffs in DePuy hip lawsuits, were each given two minutes to give a presentation before Judge Katz. Defense counsel representing DePuy Orthopaedics were present in the courtroom. Judge Katz will likely make a decision about the membership of the steering committee in the next few weeks, before the next DePuy hip court conference, which Judge Katz indicated may be in early February.
