Adelphi University to Host Third Annual African American Literary Read-In
Adelphi University is pleased to announce that it will host the third annual African American Literary Read-In, entitled “Herstory/History: Voices from the Journey.” This event, a part of the 22nd national initiative of the African American Literary Read-In celebrated by readers from 49 states in schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, and community and professional organizations, will be held on February 14, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC), Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, and is free and open to the public.The Read-In will promote literacy during Black History Month in order to expand acknowledgement of the depth of Black culture. Adelphi President Robert A. Scott will deliver the welcome address for the Read-In. Among the readers will be Associate Professor Jacqueline LaMon, students in Associate Professor Melanie Bush’s Special Topics: Understanding Race Today and from Intro to Sociology classes, Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Steven J. Rubin, students in Adelphi’s English Honor Society, and author of Basketball Slave and son of an original Harlem Globetrotter Mark Johnson. In addition, children from Adelphi’s Alice Brown Early Learning Center will be featured listeners on stage while being read age appropriate books by Ruth S. Ammon School of Education Visiting Assistant Professor Fayth Vaughn-Shavuo and Mary Dixon Lake, a literacy teacher and children’s author of I Love Bugs and others.
The Read-In is sponsored by the African, Black and Caribbean Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, English Department, Learning Center, Performing Arts Center, Sociology Department, and Writing Center.
