The Rising Trend of IIT Engineers turning professors
Moradabad: There is no doubt that IIT-ians have held our country’s flag high in the global technological arena. Not just in the technology arena, IIT-ians have contributed immensely in other key areas like infrastructure development, education, human resource development, manufacturing and telecom as well. More number of IIT-ians are being seen in research and development and their problem-solving mindset proves quite useful in any task they apply their mind to. It is common knowledge that IIT-ians have been the torch –bearers of India’s technological progress in the developed world. Some of them have set up successful companies both in India and abroad while others are heading transnational corporations. However, the global economic recession which plagued many high growth industries has shown that Education is one such sector that is fairly recession proof as consumer spending on education does not dip even in periods of slow growth. It is precisely due to this macro-economic phenomenon that institutes which prepare students for admissions to professional colleges have experienced exponential growth rates on an year-on-year basis. The latent potential of the IIT-JEE training industry has now been realized by IIT graduates who now prefer a well paying and less stressful teaching job in a coaching institute to a high flying career in an MNC. With average salaries of professors in IIT-JEE training institutes hovering in the range of 1.5 to 7 lacs per month, it is no surprise that top –of the line talent from IITs is now looking beyond the glitz and glamour of the corporate world to a secure, stable , recession-proof career in the education space. And teaching offers them mental satisfaction as it does not have the stresses and highs and lows of a typical corporate career.
It has also been observed that institutes that have set up base in smaller towns have registered high volume growth as compared to their counterparts in the metros. This phenomenon can be explained partly by the fact that students in metros have more avenues for career advancement while students in smaller towns have limited career options and aspire to migrate to either the metropolitan cities or foreign territories to obtain gainful, lucrative employment. Therefore, in our assessment, the IIT-JEE training industry would continue to attract high quality academic talent from IIT as it has been doing for the past couple of years and a large number of corporates will continue to buy stakes in IIT-JEE training space either through equity, joint ventures or by setting up online portals that cater to this market segment that shows price insensitive demand.
