Allershausen (Germany) – Started with its production in May 2010, SemiQuarz Wafer already proves to be one of the worldwide leaders in the fabrication of quartz, glass and sapphire wafer products for the semiconductor and solar industries. Wafers made of quartz, glass or sapphire, are the basis of the modern micro system technology. It is especially used in the industries of semiconductor, MOEMS, e.g. micro mirror for laser televisions, as strap material for the mechanical stabilization of thin Si-diaphragms or sensors, as etching structuring masks for MEMS’s and also for solar systems. There, it enables the industry to gain further efficiency, productivity and innovative products. As a business partner, SemiQuarz Wafer works with its customers to design special wafers that meet the exact specifications and high standards required in the industries. This includes various substrate types such as blank wafers, custom-designed structure wafers, custom-coated wafers and glass-Si compound systems. Located in Allershausen, in the south of Germany, SemiQuarz Wafer operates worldwide. Its distribution partners are based in Europe, the U.S.A., Singapore and Taiwan. By now, SemiQuarz Wafer looks back of over six months of successful production.

To start with SemiQuarz Wafer had to be the next step forward”. Together with a team of experts the company managed already to gain customers, which include the largest and most technically advanced semiconductor companies in the world, as well as foundry chip producers and equipment manufacturers. „We also measure our success on the base of customer happiness. We reach a satisfaction rate of 98 percent, measured by survey and complaint rate”, comments Mike Fritzsche and keeps going: „This provides the basis for a successful und sustainable development of SemiQuarz Wafer“.
Meets the needs
As a business partner, SemiQuarz Wafer works with its customers to design special wafers that meet the exact specifications and high standards required in the industries. SemiQuarz Wafer produces quartz, glass and special silicon wafers with diameters of 4’’ up to 300mm as well as sapphire wafers with diameters of 4’’ up to 8’’. „The thickness starts at 100 μm“, explains Mike Fritzsche. „This means our wafers are extremely thin and brittle substrates. Yet, we are able to make out variations in the thickness less than one-tenth of a human hair and can exclude wafers that vary too much.“ SemiQuarz Wafer also provides custom-designed structure wafers, custom-coated wafers (e.g. chrome) and glass-Si compound systems. All wafers are produced in clean room environment. They are ISO 4-6 certified, which enables the company to keep the surface contamination of its wafer products extremely low.
Innovation: Cluster-Analyse
To secure the high quality of the substrates, the company uses a manufacturing execution and quality managements system (Integrated Management System 2.0). The system enables SemiQuarz Wafer to track down every single wafer produced within the company at any work in process or even shipping stage. Additional to the variation of thickness, the substrates have to be kept free of particles and scratches. SemiQuarz Wafer has therefore developed a pioneering system, which identifies very precisely defects, e.g. scratches, marks or faults on the edge, on quartz, glass and sapphire wafers. The automated cluster analysis and macro inspection is based on DBSCAN – Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise and enables SemiQuarz Wafer to analyze each wafer very carefully and ensure its quality on very high levels. It starts off by capturing the data of the image and then goes over to a real time analysis on the base of an algorithm. As a result, the system subsumes all detected defects of the wafers and shows them on error patterns. Hence the wafers can be classified. Finally the system provides a quantitative analysis of the results and a suggestion on how to proceed further. The innovative system has many advantages for the industry. It improves the production process as well as the rework efficiency and offers an advanced process control. “Innovations like this, enables us to extend our competitive edge und get even more customers enthusiastic about our products”, so Mike Fritzsche.
