Angiography is a procedure used in vascular medical imaging of the neck, brain, heart, and kidneys. This is done using contrast agents such as lohexol and lopamidol, which are injected into the blood stream through a thin plastic tube (catheter) placed directly in the blood vessel. It detects abnormalities or blockages in the circulatory system (also called occlusion), and some institutions diagnose cardiac disease, renal function, detect renal cysts or tumors, and aneurysms (abnormal blood vessel swelling, tumors, (Abnormal tangling of veins and arteries), diagnoses problems with the retina, and is also used to provide an accurate "map" of the heart before neurosurgical surgery or open heart surgery.
