Polypropylene Catalyst Market Trends 2018 | Global Leaders –

Market Overview

Polypropylene catalysts are used to convert propylene to polypropylene in a polymerization reaction. The different types of polypropylene catalysts include Ziegler–Natta and metallocene. The former is preferred as it is cost-effective and provides good morphology control during polymerization. It is a heterogeneous catalyst consisting of a transition metal and an organometallic co-catalyst. Metallocenes are homogenous metal catalysts with a transition metal atom sandwiched between two cyclopentadienyl anions with the formula (C5H5)2M, where ‘M’ is the transition metal ion.

Based on manufacturing process, the global polymerization catalyst market has been divided into gas-phase process, bulk process, and others. The gas-phase process takes place in a fluidized bed reactor and produces high-purity polypropylene and a negligible amount of polypropylene residue. The cost-effectiveness and generation of high-purity polypropylene have led to the widespread use of the gas-phase process. The bulk-phase process occurs in a loop reactor using an initiator in the absence of a solvent to produce polypropylene in bulk.

The high-viscous intermediate results in degradation and discoloration of the product due to improper cooling. Thus, the process is less preferred.
Polypropylene catalysts are used to produce polypropylene for films, packaging, automotive parts, and tubes. The development of hazard-free catalysts with enhanced properties poses a major challenge to key market players while the rising focus on metallocene catalyst-based polypropylene production and availability of alternative raw materials for polypropylene production provides lucrative opportunities to players in the global polypropylene catalyst market. The Ziegler–Natta catalyst segment has gained a substantial share of the global polypropylene catalyst market over the past few years and is expected to remain dominant during the assessment period.

Stringent regulations against the use of phthalate-based polypropylene catalysts in developed countries are projected to restrain the growth of the global polypropylene catalyst market.

Regional Analysis

The global polypropylene catalyst market has been studied for five key regions, namely, Asia-Pacific, North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East & Africa.

In 2017, North America accounted for the largest share of the global polypropylene catalyst market, followed by Europe. In 2016, Clariant, a world leader of specialty chemicals, opened a new polypropylene catalyst production facility, estimated to be the largest plant for catalyst production in the US. Owing to strict regulations on the use of phthalic catalysts for polypropylene production, one of the major companies in Europe, LyondellBasell Industries Holdings BV have started using non-phthalate catalysts for different grades of polypropylene. In 2017, Germany was the largest market for polypropylene catalysts. Spain and France are the other major contributors to the growth of the regional polypropylene catalyst
market.

The market in Asia-Pacific is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period due to the rising demand in end-use industries such as chemicals, packaging, automotive, and medical. Low labor costs, easy availability of raw materials, and a rising population with increasing purchasing power is expected to propel the growth of the regional market. In 2017, China dominated the polypropylene catalyst market in Asia-Pacific.

The Latin American market is projected to grow at a relatively slower pace owing to less demand for polypropylene catalysts. The prominent countries in this region are Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. The market in the Middle East & Africa is expected to witness steady growth in the near future owing to rise in polypropylene production by the three major companies in the Middle East—Borouge, Sadara Chemical Company, and Oman Oil Refineries & Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC). Egypt has been a leading consumer of polypropylene catalysts over the past five years and is expected to continue its dominance in Africa during the forecast period.

Segmentation Analysis

The global polypropylene catalyst market has been segmented based on product type, manufacturing process, application, end-use industry, and region.

On the basis of product type, the global polypropylene catalyst market has been classified as Ziegler-Natta catalyst, metallocene catalyst, and others.

Based on manufacturing process, the global polypropylene catalyst market has been divided into bulk process, gas-phase process, and others.

By application, the global polypropylene catalyst market has been segregated into films, fibers, tubes, injection-molded products, and others.

Based on end-use industry, the global polypropylene catalyst market has been categorized into automotive, packaging, medical, chemicals, and others.

The global polypropylene catalyst market has been studied for five key regions—Asia-Pacific, North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East & Africa.
