Automated optical inspection (AOI) is an automated visual inspection of the printed circuit board, where a camera autonomously scans the device under test for both catastrophic failure, missing component and quality defects. It is commonly used in the manufacturing process because it is a non-contact test method. It is implemented at many stages through the manufacturing process including bare board inspection, solder paste inspection, pre-reflow and post-reflow as well as other stages.

Automated optical inspection (AOI) has become an essential tool in today’s surface-mount-technology (SMT) manufacturing environment. It provides a reliable solution for the inspection of printed circuit boards (PCB’s) in the electronic manufacturing industry.

The rapidly growing demand for automated inspection systems in the consumer electronics sector drives the growth of this market worldwide. In the past few decades, the circuits used in consumer electronic applications are more complicated. The various factors such as advancements in the surface mounting technology, subsequent reductions in size and high quality of products create the accurate inspection system. Market Segmentation by Type

On the basis of types, Global Automated Optical Inspection Market is segmented as 2D AOI Systems and 3D AOI Systems.

2D inspection technology is the mostly used AOI solution by electronics manufacturers. 2D AOI system is configured with multiple ultra-high resolution cameras, 10 to 15 Mega Pixel resolution, precision telecentric lenses and multi-tiered lighting technology to properly illuminate regions of interest across the assembly.

It is a reliable method for carrying out post-reflow inspection. However, the technical features offered  by the 2D AOI systems available on the market differ in many respects, including camera resolution (in μm/pixels), size of the camera sensor (number of pixels), field of view resulting from the resolution and camera size, frame rate (number of images per second), presence of angled cameras, acquisition of full-resolution color images (three color separations with a full number of pixels), algorithm-based image processing or image comparison, and multi-colored illumination from as many directions in space as possible.

3D inspection technology is used in the electronic inspection industry, especially for inspecting solder paste depositions on printed circuit boards directly after the screen printing process. 3D inspection has emerged as a viable technology for testing gull-wing and BGA devices as well as a host of other co-planarity sensitive circuitry on finished PCB assemblies. There are basically two different methodologies by which 3D inspection is employed in AOI machines. The first is Laser Measurement, the second is Multi-Frequency Moiré Phase Shift Image Processing. Laser Measurement methodology uses a laser subsystem to scan across gull-wing lead tips as well as provide the 3D measurement of BGA and other height sensitive devices. This proven methodology works very well for detecting co-planarity defects that may otherwise be missed with a conventional 2D inspection. Additionally, it is also used for post-reflow inspection.

3D AOI inspection system has several advantages such as it provides true co-planarity inspection capability and helps to reduce the false call rate. Additionally, it provides volumetric inspection data and helps in the absolute detection of lifted leads and devices.

AOI evaluates the quality of manufactured products with the help of visual information and uses a two-part machine: first, a PC-based system performs the defect inspection and then a PLC-based system controls the operation of industrial equipment and processes. Industrial PCs (IPC) are often used as the main control device.

Camera used in AOI system in the most crucial part. Currently, the camera used in AOI systems ranging from XGA to multi-megapixel high-resolution sensors. This means that each picture frame will have from 768 thousand up to several million data points. Newest cameras can capture over 100 frames per second. Multiplying the above numbers shows that an AOI system is capable of generating a tremendous amount of data as it scans a PCB assembly. These cameras generate monochrome (black and white) or colour images during the inspection. Additionally, the camera system should be matched by the computing power and processing software of the AOI system, otherwise, the data becomes useless.

Among the regions, North America is the dominating region in the global automated inspection system market. The U.S. accounted to be the largest market share holding region in the AOI market across North America. The U.S. has held 73.5% market shares in the AOI market, in 2017 owing to the presence of large key players, ongoing research and development activity and the growing demand for innovative products. In addition, the ongoing innovations and digital up gradation in the healthcare and consumer electronics sectors across the North America region are likely to escalate the growth of the AOI system market.
