Autoinjectors Creating Opportunities for Drug Marketers
(Amherst, NH) – The administration of therapeutic drugs via injection is an indispensable delivery method for numerous drugs critical to patient health and well-being. Now this segment is evolving in response to changing patient populations, new classes of powerful therapeutic drugs and healthcare administration initiatives. For drugs developed for self-administration and available in prefilled syringes, autoinjectors have been shown to provide a more user-friendly outer package and improved compliance. While autoinjectors are sometimes designed to work with a particular injectable product as a form of pharmaceutical branding, the typical autoinjector is designed to fit one or more standard sizes of prefilled disposable syringes.Autoinjectors owe their existence to the emergence of the prefilled syringe as a major drug delivery platform. The number of drugs available in prefilled syringes as a percentage of all injectable drugs continues to grow. So too does the number of injectable drugs indicated for chronic conditions and self-administration. These market factors foretell positive market dynamics for autoinjector over the near term.
Economic barriers are also changing, creating new options for market participants. “Until recently, autoinjectors were designed to be reused because their unit cost was too expensive to be successfully marketed as a throw-away device,” explains George Perros, Greystone Managing Director. “Recent improvements in materials technology and device design have led to the creation of a class of autoinjectors that can be made economically in production quantities. These autoinjectors, which can be marketed as single-use devices, are providing expanded opportunities for both patient and drug marketer.”
As designs continue to evolve, improvements in the manufacturability of autoinjectors – including reduced part counts and increased use of automated processes – will result in price points for autoinjectors that will increase their market share of all PFS devices.
