Artist Robbi Firestone to paint Esalen Institute co-founder

"Michael Murphy is a remarkable man on a lifelong quest to see the best in humanity and to make that potential actualized. It is an honor to paint him,” said Firestone, who considers Esalen a place for her spiritual renewal.
Firestone donated the commission for the Big Sur, CA. center’s fund-raising auction, and Esalen backers pooled resources to win the $15,000 bid. They gave Murphy the portrait commission as gift for his 80th birthday.
The Murphy sitting continues a trend of non-stop work for Firestone, whose images hang in boardrooms and homes from Zurich to Manhattan and Beverly Hills.
She recently completed a portrait of Grammy-winning bluesman Keb’ Mo’ -- who said Firestone “looked into my soul and pulled me out” -- started on a portrait of Seattle-area philanthropist Sharon Ballantine, and is scheduled in late January or early February to present her portrait of MercyMe lead singer Bart Millard.
She also just completed a collaborative show with a Sotheby’s International Real Estate affiliate, a new and highly successful venture for the real estate agency.
Firestone’s works are more than one-dimensional images. A Robbi Firestone is a unique melding of portraiture and words – what she calls a “Spirit Capture Portrait” -- intuitively drawn from her inspiration about her subject as they work together. She imbeds text describing “the Beauty I See in You.”
Robbi Firestone, a Pacific Northwest contemporary portrait artist, commits more than 10 percent of her earnings to philanthropic causes. Her efforts include donations and roles as featured speaker or emcee for organizations such as the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Friends of the Children, and Women Helping Women.
The Esalen Institute, in Big Sur, CA., is one of the leading centers for realizing human potential through experience, education and research, and offers public programs and workshops. Its Center for Theory & Research is helping solve real-world problems while leading the way in research that could profoundly affect the planet’s societal values.
