Press release from: Adelphi University

Adelphi University is proud to feature Improvisation as Strategy: Scenes from an Iraq Embed, a multimedia exhibition chronicling experiences by photojournalist and documentarian Brian Palmer as an embedded journalist in Iraq from 2004-2006. The exhibit highlights Mr. Palmer’s photography, journal entries, his documentary Full Disclosure, as well as additional clips not scene in the film. The exhibition will be on view from January 16 through February 20, 2011 in both the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery and the Fine Arts Exhibition Hall in the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts. A free official film screening of Full Disclosure will be held on February 7, 2011, at 4:15 p.m. in the Thomas Lovely Dixon Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, followed by a Q&A session with Brian Palmer at 5:30 p.m. and a reception in the University Center Gallery from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Brian Palmer is a journalist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. In 2009 he completed Full Disclosure, for which he received grants from the Ford Foundation and the Applied Research Center. He followed young U.S. Marines on dozens of missions during three embeds in Iraq between 2004 and 2006, and continued to document the war and its human cost through 2009. He was awarded a Nation Institute’s Investigative Fund grant in 2010 for reporting in Bangladesh.

According to the filmmaker, Full Disclosure captures the sometimes benign but often tragic miscommunication between U.S. troops and Iraqi citizens. Amid the inexorable and destructive momentum of the occupation, the documentary explores the consequences of our inability to speak with and understand those whose country we occupy. It exposes the gap between what we think we’re doing in Iraq and what we’re actually doing.

Mr. Palmer has written for Mother Jones, The Huffington Post, Pixel Press.org, Independent World Report (Stockholm), and other publications. He has photographed for the New York Times, Time Inc, and the North Star Fund, as well as shot and produced video for PBS, MTV News and Docs, and Color Lines.org. He was an on-air correspondent at CNN from 2000-2002 and prior to that was a staff writer for Fortune and the Beijing bureau chief for U.S. News & World Report. He is a fellow at New York University Law School’s Center on Law and Security and a faculty member in the M.F.A. Photography, Video and Related Media Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

The Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Fine Arts Exhibition Hall in the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Art is open Sunday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information about this and other upcoming art exhibitions, please visit adelphi.edu/artmuseum/exhibitions.
