Virtual Dementia Tour to visit Cape Coral, Coconut Point
The community is gaining a better understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia thanks to Oasis Senior Advisors. The Bonita Springs-based national franchisor is taking its Virtual Dementia Tour on the road in February to a pair of Lee Health facilities.The one-of-a-kind sensory experience will be available at no cost on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Lee Health – Coconut Point on 23450 Via Coconut Point in Estero, and on Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Lee Health’s Heathy Life Center on 609 SE 13th Court in Cape Coral.
The Virtual Dementia Tour provides unmatched insight about what it’s like to live with dementia and related disorders, including Alzheimer’s. Participants are outfitted with gloves that impair the use of their hands, headphones that affect their hearing, and glasses that blur their vision, simulating the effects of memory loss disorders. They’re asked to perform common tasks while wearing the gear and discover they’re much more difficult than they otherwise would be.
“For us to truly deal with the challenges these disorders pose to individuals and to society as a whole, we must understand exactly what those challenges are,” Oasis CEO Tim Evankovich said. “We’re proud to partner with Lee Health to promote empathy and awareness through the Virtual Dementia Tour.”
The tour was developed by noted Geriatric Specialist P.K. Beville through the nonprofit Second Wind Dreams organization, which certified members of the Oasis Senior Advisors team as facilitators. Oasis has a recreational vehicle that’s specially outfitted for taking the tour to hospitals, health care centers, senior living communities, conventions and other gathering places.
