Whether you sell medical devices, manufacture proprietary plastics or offer IT consulting services there is a Federal or State contracting Vehicle your Small Business would benefit from being on. If you as a small business owner are not familiar with terms like Millennia Lite, Alliant or Commits Nexgen you are doing your small business a disfavor.
No matter what your Small Business offers there is a Federal or State contracting vehicle that specifically targets your product, service or industry, With Billions of dollars being awarded to small businesses across the board. The 2009 total dollars spent by the Federal Government with small business was 98.6 Billion dollars. That number is expected to increase in the 2011 current Federal Fiscal year. Most business owners are familiar with the General Services Administration (GSA), the largest of the Federal contracting vehicles. They are not familiar with the NIH (National Institute of Health) contract vehicles, or the Veterans Administration contracts, or any other Branch of the Federal Government. Often leaving these contracts to be awarded to the same Small Businesses over and over again allowing a small few to reap the rewards the Federal and State marketplace has to offer.
In this economy any small business owner that overlooks the federal and State Marketplace is cutting off a revenue stream that does not ebb and flow as the Commercial markets do. While Commercial business spending is down Federal and State spending are at record highs. Small and large business with a focus on Federal and State business are enjoying record revenues. With the war going on in Afghanistan, All branches of the military are replenishing common stock items on a regular basis. This allows companies such as clothing manufacturers, machine shops and weapons suppliers just to name a few an ongoing requirements from the Federal Government that buys in the Billions of Dollars to replenish what they use. The national Institute of Health is tasked with overseeing the current and future status of the American healthcare system and is one of the largest procurers of products and services from Small business in America. With that being said we could list off all the State and Federal bureaucracies and the yearly budgets they have to award to small business but I think my point has been made.
To further drive this home any small business that has lived through the inevitable booked receivable that is no longer collectable is missing the one market where that will not happen. Since the late 1990’s Uncle Sam has been mandated to pay his bills in 30 days or pay interest on the unpaid receivable. While I have never seen a business paid interest on an outstanding Federal receivable I also no longer see them keep a receivable on their books for more than 45 days, with 45 being an extreme. This has been a welcome change by both small and large business and no longer makes working with the government a challenge if your company is in a struggling cash position. Too many businesses are sitting with too many dollars in the 60 to 90 day column running to the mailbox everyday to see if they have received a payment.
If you are looking to enter the Federal or State market I would encourage it, I never understood a company’s apprehension in selling to any market segment. But since Uncle Sam also owns the currency printing presses you can rest assured your small business will be paid in a timely fashion. If you would like more information on the Federal Marketplace you can go to our website www.govmcs.com or email info@govmcs.com. All consultations are always without charge and we can help point you into the Federal Space your product or service is most required.
