Downsizing Booming and Need for Movers and Self Storage Soars says Johnson Storage and Moving

San Diego, California, December 1, 2010— The San Diego moving company Johnson Storage and Moving reports seeing an increased demand for moving and storage facility services in the San Diego, California area. This increase in demand is due, in part, to several factors changing consumer and home buying trends.

Within the last several years, the state of the national economy has led many homeowners to downsize their homes in order to navigate the troubled economy. Many of them seek to retain some of the property from the old home, though it may not fit in the new smaller home, reports Johnson Storage.

"Homeowners are downsizing in large numbers, but many are moving much of their property into safe storage for later use and are choosing to use storage companies. Storage is safe, secure, and more easily accessible to customers than in the past. It may be that they want to save from having to purchase large items again, should they choose to buy a larger home when the economy or the job situation improves, or want to keep items safe before an impending move," explained Gary Bell, V.P / General Manager.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the median home size has dropped by 6 percent since 2007.

Another significant trend affecting the increased need for moving and storage is a greater focus on buying smaller homes in order to reduce the ecological footprint on the environment.

"Here in San Diego, we saw a large number of people buying and building the large McMansion type homes for a time. Today, there is a shift in people wanting to live a simpler more eco-friendly lifestyle and choosing to move into smaller apartments, bungalows and condos."

Storing a limited number of items in storage facilities is seen as an affordable and eco-friendly alternative and compromise between a large and lavish lifestyle and a simple lifestyle that retains some of the investments made in purchases.
