What are jury`s expectations regarding Trimo Urban Crash? Students should present something new and not be naive

A challenge for students of architecture and design “You design an original urban installation that serves a public purpose. We will build it.” The interest for Trimo Urban Crash is increasing

Slovenia / Ljubljana, 9th November – The third international competition Trimo Urban Crash challenges students of architecture and design from all over the world to prepare a solution for an original urban installation in the residential area, Fužine, in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, by 31stJanuary, 20011.

Submitted solutions will be evaluated by an international jury consisting of professors of architecture and design, architects (practitioners), the author of the previous winning solutions, a representative of Trimo, and a representative of the Municipality of Ljubljana. The website for Trimo Urban Crash received 20 % more registrations in the first 3 weeks of the competition, compared to the same period in the last competition.

Miloš FFlorijančič, Chairman of the competition, associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Ljubljana, Slovenia:
“The students’ way of thinking should surpass the mere object and its functionality, and focus on the meaning and symbolism that the object has in that specific space of the district of Fužine. It is located near the Ljubljanica river, which represents the water way that connects Fužine with the city centre. Fužine castle is located nearby - an old mansion which is also the home of the Architectural museum of Slovenia, with the remains of the former castle’s park right in front of it. On the other hand, this is the suburbs with multicultural inhabitants, of open-minded characteristics. So there are many possible connections for synthesis of the winning solution. And I am left with impatiently waiting for them.”

Vedran Mimica, member of the jury, Director of the institute Berlage, Rotterdam, the Netherlands: “There are two major diseases in world wide architectural education today. One is “of course-ism” and another “naivety”. So, if I may, I will ask students not to tell us what we already know and by all means not to be naive. ”

The winning project will be chosen through a two round evaluation by an international jury, followed by the final vote, when the public will be present; and announced by the end of April 2011. The project will be built in the autumn of 2011. At the official opening of the building, finalists will meet members of the jury and be able to participate in architectural workshops in Ljubljana.

Trimo will build the winning project in Ljubljana and also award the winner with a scholarship for the renowned London-based School of Architecture – Architectural Association (AA), and finalists will be awarded with participation in the architectural workshop in Slovenia.

The international competition, Trimo Urban Crash, offers students and universities an excellent communication channel to efficiently establish contact, an opportunity for knowledge exchange, and comparison of different architectural approaches. Trimo Urban Crash is a competition that encourages creative re-modelling of an urban environment with progressive construction materials and technologies, produced by Trimo, as an established European provider.

The experience of creating a solution for a potentially realisable project is also very important. Trimo strives to expand connections and cooperation with academia, to ensure diverse content for the syllabuses in Faculties of Architecture, and to encourage constructive cooperation between theory, practice, and economics, in different areas. Considering the strong tradition of Trimo’s research development department, and the focus on a professional approach, Trimo Urban Crash is one of many innovative projects.

Trimo received almost 150 projects, submitted from 17 countries, in the previous 2008/2009 competition. The winning project was that of a cultural stage with the characteristics of an urban sculpture, submitted by Polish students.
