SGS Reminds Gas Appliance Manufacturers of the Importance of Understanding Target Market Requirements

01-25-2019 05:38 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance

Press release from: SGS

/ PR Agency: Sugarloaf Marketing
SGS is reminding manufacturers and suppliers of gas appliances of the importance of understanding and complying with the correct legal requirements for their target market.

The profusion of different gas appliances available on the market, from heaters and hobs to camping stoves and boilers, demonstrates the functionality of a fuel-type which is easy to use, cleaner than traditional fire and more responsive than electric. Gas is, however, dangerous. Functionality is, in part, the reason it is dangerous, because it is also flammable, poisonous, invisible, odorless, silent, and it can’t be stopped. This has led to authorities around the world introducing regulations to protect their consumers from the inherent hazards associated with gas appliances.

The plethora of safety standards relating to gas components and appliances around the world can be difficult to navigate. Different countries have different regulations and standards. For example, gas hobs are covered by EN 30 in the European Union, AS 5263.1.1 in Australia, and NBR 13723 in Brazil. In South Africa, however, all gas appliances are covered by one standard – SANS 1539.

Manufacturers and suppliers therefore need to stay informed about the standards that apply in their target markets. Analysis to prove compliance might include tests relating to:
• Construction – stability, strength
• Soundness to check for leaks
• Heat input (Unit: kW, BTU)
• Ignition and flame cross-lighting
• Flame stability (Lift and light back)
• Ability to resist wind and rain
• Resistance of burner to overheating
• Combustion (CO/CO2)
• NOx
• Atmosphere sensing – oxygen depletion test
• Temperature rise – including LPG cylinder
• Efficiency
• Sooting
• ErP
• Operating of flame supervision device
• Valve torsion & bending test
• Valve endurance test
• Elastomeric material resistance to lubricants and gas
• Regulator performance

Stakeholders therefore need to be certain their testing and certification provider understands what standards apply to the target market and is competent in the necessary testing methods.
