Bumps To Babies Photography by Tamara Musa

Bumps To Babies Photography by Tamara Musa

For many first time mums, preparing for your new bundle of joy can be oh so exciting but also quite stressful. From how you will set up the nursery to which pram to buy, there are so many different things to consider when planning for your baby’s arrival.

One thing that usually doesn’t come to mind until after birth is newborn photography and here I am going to explain why this should be one of the first things to organise on your priority list.

Newborn photography is usually done in the first two weeks from your baby’s birth and here are some of the reasons why; in the first two weeks, newborns are very flexible and very sleepy which allows photographers to curl them into those cute and adorable poses. After the first two weeks, your baby will become more aware of their surroundings and begin to stay awake for much longer periods of time. This means that it will be much more difficult to get any sleepy shots of your new babe. And most importantly, unless you’ve had children before you won’t realise how much your new baby will change after those first two weeks so it’s super important to capture their tiny little details as they will never be again, brand new.

Why is it so important to book while you’re still pregnant?

Your new baby will be your most prized possession. They will grow so quickly before your eyes and before you know it you will be missing those sweet little fingers and tiny features you once held for such a short period of time. If you are looking for a reputable photographer who will capture your newborn beautifully, you can expect them to be booked out months in advance. So if you approach these photographers once baby has arrived, chances are they won’t have any availability to fit you in on such short notice.

Choosing the right photographer for you.

Now when it comes to choosing a photographer to book with, you need to remember that they will be handling your baby for a few hours so it’s extremely important that you choose carefully. Some of the things to look for in a photographer and questions include:

How much experience do they have?

Have they got children of their own?

Are they up to date with their vaccinations?

Which equipment do they use? (ie: camera’s and lenses)

Do they have a variety of props or do you have to bring my own?

Do they have a studio or do they travel to your home?

These are just a few of the obvious ones, however depending on the style of photography you are after, be sure to take a good look through their portfolios both on their website and social media accounts to be certain that they are the photographer for you.

How can I book in my newborn session when I can’t guarantee a date they will arrive?

Many photographers such as myself, only take on a certain amount of bookings per week or month, to allow room for early and late arrivals. When you book, we make a tentative booking of your due date then when your baby arrives we will schedule in your newborn session within the first two weeks.

So to sum things up, make sure you start looking into booking your newborn photography session in the early days and secure your spot prior to your baby’s arrival because those first two weeks will be the most treasured two weeks of your life and will be gone faster than you will ever know!
