Cardiff-based Rhys Davies Freight Logistics has saved a local charity £10,000 by allowing it to park its Mobile Cancer Support Unit at their premises in Taffs Well.

Tenovus, the local cancer charity which aims to prevent, treat and help cancer patients, was in need of somewhere to park its Mobile Cancer Support Unit over night when it was not being used. Rhys Davies offered the charity the perfect solution, allowing it to store the unit on-site in its secure grounds, away from possible vandalism.

Richard Pugh, Tenovus’ Community Development Manager, said that without Rhys Davies’ offer the charity would have been looking at £10,000 per year charges for a central parking point and security to make sure the unit was not tampered with. “This would have incurred extra expense which would have had to have come out of the charity and, therefore, out of the budget that goes towards helping cancer patients.”

The Mobile Cancer Support Unit has been delivering chemotherapy and other cancer treatments in Cwmbran since March 2009 and at Nantgarw since January 2010. During that time over 1,500 treatments have been provided with up to 25 patients receiving treatment each day, without the need for them to travel to a hospital. Richard continued, “The unit is worth £350,000 so if it was vandalised the charity would take a direct hit causing a knock-on effect to our patients.”

Gary Phillips, Rhys Davies’ Commercial Manager, said that the company was more than happy to help the charity in any way it could. “When expanded, the unit is quite large, roughly 16 car parking spaces, so finding somewhere sensible to store it would have been very hard for Tenovus. We had space for them to park it on-site and so of course we were happy to help. It is a small contribution compared to the great work the charity does.”

Rhys Davies is also assisting the charity by offering them basic warehousing of stock for their shops across Cardiff. “The guys at Rhys Davies have been very helpful in advising us on how best to store stock,” Richard said. “That has been a huge help and essential because stock is how we raise money to keep the work of the charity going.”

“Rhys Davies has been exceptionally supportive and we really appreciate all the help the company has given us,” Richard concluded.
