Press release from: SunGreen Systems

NEW SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM WILL CUT POWER COSTS,
REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS AND SUPPORT LOCAL ECONOMY

LOS ANGELES – For over 50 years, KPFK Radio has beamed progressive messages into the sky over L.A. Now, with the help of solar-energy company SunGreen Systems, KPFK will turn to the sky to power its station.

SunGreen Systems, an Irwindale-based developer of solar-energy systems, will install a parking-lot based solar photovoltaic canopy system at KPFK’s studio complex in North Hollywood. The system will be featuring solar panels from BYD America Corp, whose North American Headquarters is currently under construction in downtown Los Angeles. BYD and SunGreen Systems, Inc. have recently partnered to develop BYD’s renewable energy product lines in the U.S.

The system will reduce KPFK’s energy costs by an estimated 31%. In addition, the system will reduce carbon dioxide emissions equal to planting 18.4 acres of trees. The annual carbon reduction estimates include:
• 165 pounds of nitrous oxide from western coal
• 56,941 pounds of carbon dioxide from western coal
• 36,442 pounds of carbon dioxide from natural gas

Actor/activist Ed Begly, Jr. has endorsed the project and will attend the November 22 signing ceremony between SunGreen and KPFK.

“We’re honored to help make KPFK the first public radio station in Southern California to power its facilities with sunlight,” said SunGreen Chairman Y.Y. Lin. “It’s a natural fit, since both SunGreen and KPFK actively promote community interests and clean energy.”

“We hope to set an example to our community and listeners,” said KPFK Operations Director Zuberi Fields. “Not only do we create an off-grid energy source, but we show our neighbors the value of committing to the environment through renewable energy.”

The project should be completed in March 2011. To cover the costs of the system, KPFK is soliciting tax-deductible donations on its website, http://www.KPFK.org.

KPFK Radio and the Pacifica Radio Network began 60 years ago at Berkeley’s KPFA. KPFK Radio is heard throughout Southern California at 90.7 FM Los Angeles, 98.7 FM Santa Barbara, 93.7 FM Northern San Diego County and worldwide at KPFK.org.
